Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has confirmed that Republic of Ireland international midfielderAndy Reid has been forced to endure a calf operation.
The 27-year-old ex-Nottingham Forest and Tottenham star was initially sidelined in February with a hamstring injury but picked up a calf problem when he began his comeback.
Bruce hopes Reid will be fit enough to take part in pre-season training, telling the club's official website:"Andy's had a calf problem and unfortunately an operation proved to be the best way forward.
"All being well, he should be back in time for the start of pre-season training in July."
Meanwhile, Jamie Chandler has agreed to join Darlington on a permanent basis.
The 21-year-old, who featured in 16 matches for the Quakers during a loan spell with the League Two side earlier in the campaign, has penned a two-year deal with the club.Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email
